We sent revelations to Moses telling him, "Travel with My servants during the night and strike a dry road across the sea (for them). Have no fear of being overtaken (by the Pharaoh) nor of anything else". 77 Pharaoh pursued them with his legions so they were overwhelmed from the sea with that which drowned them. 78 And Pharaoh led his people astray and did not guide [them]. 79 O children of Israel! [Thus] We saved you from your enemy, and [then] We made a covenant with you on the right-hand slope of Mount Sinai, and repeatedly sent down manna and quails unto you, [saying,] 80 (Saying): Eat of the good things wherewith We have provided you, and transgress not in respect thereof lest My wrath come upon you: and he on whom My wrath cometh, he is lost indeed. 81 But I am indeed Most Forgiving to him who repents and believes and does righteous works and keeps to the Right Way." 82 ۞ "And what made you hasten from your people, O Musa (Moses)?" 83 'They are upon my tracks,' Moses said. 'I have hastened, Lord, only that I may please Thee.' 84 Said He: "Verily We tested your people in your absence and the Samiri led them astray." 85 So Moses returned to his people in a state of indignation and sorrow. He said: "O my people! did not your Lord make a handsome promise to you? Did then the promise seem to you long (in coming)? Or did ye desire that Wrath should descend from your Lord on you, and so ye broke your promise to me?" 86 They said: "We broke not the promise to thee, as far as lay in our power: but we were made to carry the weight of the ornaments of the (whole) people, and we threw them (into the fire), and that was what the Samiri suggested. 87 and brought out of there (from the molten gold) the effigy of a calf that lowed." The people cried out: "This is your deity and the deity of Moses, whom Moses has forgotten." 88 Could they not see that it could not return them a word (for answer), and that it had no power either to harm them or to do them good? 89
