Thamud denied the messengers 141 When their brother Salih said unto them: fear ye not? 142 Behold, I am an apostle [sent by Him] to you, [and therefore] worthy of your trust: 143 So fear Allah and obey me. 144 And I ask of you no wage therefor; my wage is the concern only of the Lord of the Worlds. 145 Do you think that you will be left secure [forever] -- 146 “In gardens and water springs?” 147 and fields, and [these] palm-trees with slender spathes? 148 You hew dwellings in mountains and exult in that. 149 So fear Allah, and obey me. 150 "And follow not the bidding of those who are extravagant,- 151 those who spread corruption in the land instead of putting things right." 152 They said, "You are only bewitched and insane. 153 "You are but a human being like us. Then bring us a sign if you are of the truthful." 154 He said: yonder is a she-camel; to her a drink, and to you a drink, each on a day known. 155 so do her no harm, or the punishment of an awful day will befall you." 156 Then they hamstrung her; and then they became regretful. 157 So the torment took hold of them: verily herein is a sign, but most of them are not believers. 158 Yet verily your Lord is mighty and merciful. 159
