The Stars (Al-Najm)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
I CALL TO witness the star of the pleiades when it has dipped 1 your comrade is not astray, neither errs, 2 nor speaks he out of caprice. 3 It is naught but revelation that is revealed, 4 something that a very powerful one has imparted to him, 5 one endowed with immense wisdom. He came forth and stood poised, 6 And reached the highest pinnacle. 7 Then the Spectacle became closer, and came down in full view. 8 And was at a distance of two bows' length or (even) nearer, 9 Thus He revealed unto His bondman whatsoever He revealed. 10 His heart did not lie of what he saw. 11 What! do you then dispute with him as to what he saw? 12 And indeed he did see the Spectacle again. 13 At the Lote Tree of the Utmost Boundary - 14 Close to which is the Everlasting Paradise. 15 When there comes to the Lote Tree, that which comes 16 Neither did sight falter nor exceed the bounds. 17 and he certainly saw some of the greatest Signs of His Lord. 18 Have you then considered the Lat and the Uzza, 19 And Manat, the third - the other one? 20 Why - for yourselves [you would choose only] male offspring, whereas to Him [you assign] female: 21 This is certainly an unjust apportioning. 22 They are naught but names which you have named, you and your fathers; Allah has not sent for them any authority. They follow naught but conjecture and the low desires which (their) souls incline to; and certainly the guidance has come to them from their Lord. 23 Can the human being have whatever he wishes? 24 And to God belongs the First and the Last. 25
