a good many of olden times, 39 and a throng of the later folk. 40 As for the people on the left hand, how miserable they will be! 41 In fierce hot wind and boiling water, 42 And in the shades of Black Smoke: 43 (That shadow) neither cool, nor (even) good, 44 Surely they were before that made to live in ease and plenty. 45 But persisted in that greater sin, 46 and they used to say, "What! After we have died and become dust and bones, shall we indeed be raised up again? 47 And also our forefathers?" 48 Say: "Yea, those of old and those of later times, 49 will be brought together for an appointment on an appointed day. 50 "Then moreover, verily, you the erring-ones, the deniers (of Resurrection)! 51 "You verily will eat of the trees of Zaqqum. 52 And fill (your) bellies with it; 53 And drink over it scalding water, 54 Lapping it up like female camels raging of thirst with disease." 55 This shall be their hospitality on the Day of Doom. 56 We created you; therefore why will you not believe? 57 Do ye then see?- The (human Seed) that ye throw out,- 58 Is it you that create it or are We the creators? 59 We have decreed Death to be your common lot, and We are not to be frustrated 60 In order that We may bring in your place the likes of you and make you grow into what you know not. 61 You have known the first creation, then why do you not reflect? 62 Behold! that which ye sow. 63 Cause it ye to grow, or are We the Grower? 64 Were it Our Will, We could crumble it to dry powder, and ye would be left in wonderment, 65 Surely we are burdened with debt: 66 Nay, but we are deprived! 67 And have you seen the water that you drink? 68 Is it ye who shed it from the raincloud, or are We the Shedder? 69 If We willed We verily could make it bitter. Why then, give ye not thanks? 70 So what is your opinion regarding the fire which you kindle? 71 Is it you who grew its tree, or is it We Who create? 72 We made it a reminder and a provision for the needy. 73 Then glorify with praises the Name of your Lord, the Most Great. 74
