The Stars (Al-Najm)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
By the star when it setteth. 1 your companion has neither strayed nor is he misguided, 2 and neither does he speak out of his own desire: 3 This is naught but a revelation revealed, 4 He was taught by [an angel] who is mighty in power, 5 very strong; he stood poised, 6 while he was in the highest horizon; 7 Then he approached and descended 8 Till he was (distant) two bows' length or even nearer, 9 When He revealed to His votary what He revealed. 10 His heart lies not of what he saw; 11 So will you dispute with him over what he saw? 12 He saw Him indeed another time 13 At the Lote Tree of the Utmost Boundary - 14 nigh which is the Garden of the Refuge, 15 when the lote tree was covered in mystic splendour. 16 The sight [of the Prophet] did not swerve, nor did it transgress [its limit]. 17 truly did he see some of the most profound of his Sustainer's symbols. 18 HAVE YOU, then, ever considered [what you are worshipping in] Al-Lat and Al-Uzza, 19 And another, the third (goddess), Manat? 20 Is it for you the males and for Him the females? 21 that, lo and behold, is an unfair division! 22 These are only names given by yourselves and your fathers. God has not given them any authority. They, (unbelievers), only follow mere conjecture and the desires of their souls, even though guidance has already come to them from their Lord. 23 Shall man have whatever he craves? 24 To God belong the End and the Beginning. 25
