The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
O YOU ENFOLDED in your mantle (of reform), 1 Arise and deliver thy warning! 2 And your Lord glorify 3 And thy garments keep free from stain! 4 shun uncleanness; 5 and do not think that by doing such deeds, you have done a great favor to God. 6 But for your Lord be patient. 7 When the Horn is blown, 8 Truly, that Day will be a Hard Day. 9 Not of ease, for disbelievers. 10 Leave him to Me whom I created alone, 11 And gave him vast wealth. 12 and children as [love's] witnesses, 13 and whom I have provided with every resource, 14 Yet he wants that I should give him more. 15 By no means! For to Our Signs he has been refractory! 16 and I shall constrain him to a hard ascent. 17 Behold, [when Our messages are conveyed to one who is bent on denying the truth,] he reflects and meditates [as to how to disprove them] 18 death seize him, how he determined! 19 Again, death seized him, how was his determining! 20 and then he looks [around for new arguments,] 21 And frowned and puckered his brow, 22 Then he turned away, and was haughty. 23 And said: This is naught else than magic from of old; 24 It is nothing but the word of a mortal' 25 Soon will I cast him into Hell-Fire! 26 - Ah, what will convey unto thee what that burning is! - 27 It leaves and spares no one and nothing. 28 Burning the skins! 29 Over it are nineteen (angels guarding). 30 And We have set none but angels as Guardians of the Fire; and We have fixed their number only as a trial for Unbelievers,- in order that the People of the Book may arrive at certainty, and the Believers may increase in Faith,- and that no doubts may be left for the People of the Book and the Believers, and that those in whose hearts is a disease and the Unbelievers may say, "What symbol doth Allah intend by this?" Thus doth Allah leave to stray whom He pleaseth, and guide whom He pleaseth: and none can know the forces of thy Lord, except He and this is no other than a warning to mankind. 31
