The Town (Al-Balad)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
۞ I swear by this city, Makkah - 1 And you shall be made free from obligation in this city-- 2 and by parent and offspring, 3 That We created man in toil and trouble. 4 What, does he think none has power over him, 5 He says, "I have spent enormous wealth." 6 Does he then think that no one sees him? 7 Did We not assign unto him two eyes 8 and a tongue, and two lips, 9 and shown him the two paths? 10 Yet, he has not entered into Aqaba 11 And what have you understood, what the valley is! 12 To free a neck (from the burden of debt or slavery), 13 or, in a day of famine, the feeding of 14 An orphan of near relationship 15 Or to a Miskin (poor) afflicted with misery. 16 And to be of those who believe and exhort one another to perseverance and exhort one another to pity. 17 Those are the Companions of the Right. 18 But they who disbelieved in Our signs - those are the companions of the left. 19 On them is fire closed over. 20
