O Children of Israel: remember My favour wherewith I favoured you, and that verily I preferred you over the world. 47 and beware of a day when no soul for another shall give satisfaction, and no intercession shall be accepted from it, nor any counterpoise be taken, neither shall they be helped. 48 And when We delivered you from the folk of Pharaoh who were visiting you with evil chastisement, slaughtering your sons, and sparing your women; and in that was a grievous trial from your Lord. 49 and when We divided the sea for you and saved you and drowned Pharaoh's people, while you looked on. 50 Then We called Moses for an appointment of forty nights. You began to worship the calf in his absence, doing wrong to yourselves. 51 Yet after that We pardoned you, so that you might be grateful. 52 Remember, We gave Moses the Book and Discernment of falsehood and truth, that you may be guided. 53 Moses said to his people, "My people, you have done wrong to yourselves by worshipping the calf. Seek pardon from your Lord and slay yourselves." He told them that it would be best for them in the sight of their Lord, Who would forgive them, for He is All-forgiving and All-merciful. 54 And when you said to Moses: 'We will not believe in you until we see Allah openly' a thunderbolt struck you whilst you were looking. 55 Then We raised you up after your death: Ye had the chance to be grateful. 56 And We made the clouds a canopy for you and sent down Manna and Salwa (birds) on you; “Eat of the pure things We have provided you”; they did not wrong Us in the least, but indeed they wronged themselves. 57 (Children of Israel, recall My favors) when We told you, "Enter this city, enjoy eating whatever you want therein, prostrate yourselves and ask forgiveness when passing through the gate, and We shall forgive your sins, and add to the rewards of the righteous ones". 58 But those who were unjust changed it for a saying other than that which had been spoken to them, so We sent upon those who were unjust a pestilence from heaven, because they transgressed. 59
