The tribe of Thamud rejected the Messengers. 141 When their brother Salih said to them, "Will you not fear God? 142 "I am a trustworthy Messenger to you. 143 So fear God and follow me. 144 'I ask of you no wage for this; my wage falls only upon the Lord of all Being. 145 Will ye be left secure in that which is here before us, 146 amidst the gardens, springs, 147 And cornfields and palm-trees having fine spadices? 148 Though ye hew out dwellings in the mountain, being skilful? 149 So be mindful of God and listen to me. 150 "And follow not the bidding of those who are extravagant,- 151 Who spread corruption in the earth, and reform not. 152 They said: "You are only of those bewitched! 153 “You are just a human like us; therefore bring some sign if you are truthful.” 154 He said, "Here is a she-camel. She shall have her turn of drinking, as you have yours, each on an appointed day, 155 Do not touch her with malice so that punishment of a dreadful day seizes you' 156 Then they hamstrung her; and then they became regretful. 157 and torment struck them. In this there is evidence of the Truth, yet many people do not have any faith. 158 Verily Your Lord is Immensely Mighty, Most Compassionate. 159
