He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
۞ The Prophet frowned and turned away 1 that the blind man came to him. 2 What made you think that he will not grow in virtue, 3 or have been reminded [of the truth,] and helped by this reminder. 4 Now as for him who believes himself to be self-sufficient 5 Unto him thou attendest. 6 though you are not to be blamed if he would not purify himself -- 7 And for him who came to you striving, 8 and in awe [of God] 9 From him you are distracted. 10 NAY, VERILY, these [messages] are but a reminder: 11 Therefore let whoso will, keep it in remembrance. 12 (Contained) in honoured pages, 13 exalted, purified, 14 [Carried] by the hands of messenger-angels, 15 noble and most virtuous. 16 Accursed is man. How ungrateful is he! 17 Of what [stuff] has He created him? 18 Of a drop of seed. He created him and formed him according to a measure. 19 Then eased the way for him. 20 Then He causes him to die and be buried. 21 Then, when He willed, He brought him out. (As during the night of Holy Prophet’s ascension, when all the Prophets gathered behind him in the Al Aqsa mosque in Jerusalem. Or when Allah will raise everyone on the Day of Resurrection.) 22 Not one – he has not yet completed what he was commanded. 23 Then let man look at his food, 24 We poured down rain abundantly, 25 and cleaved the earth, cleaving it asunder; 26 And We made corn grow, 27 and vines and edible plants, 28 and olives, and palms, 29 and dense-tree'd gardens, 30 And fruits and fodder,- 31 an enjoyment for you and your flocks. 32 And when the Blast shall sound, 33 On the day when a man fleeth from his brother 34 and from his mother and father, 35 and his consort and his children; 36 On that day, each one has just one issue, which is enough for him. 37 On that day faces will be bright as dawn, 38 and be cheerful and joyous. 39 And many will be dust-begrimed, 40 Blackness will cover them. 41 Such will be the Rejecters of Allah, the doers of iniquity. 42
