We sent Moses with Our signs to Pharaoh and his Council, and he said: 'I am the Messenger of the Lord of the Worlds' 46 Yet when he brought forth Clear Signs from Us, then lo, they burst into laughter. 47 And all the signs We showed them were always greater than the earlier ones; and We seized them with calamities, so that they may return. 48 And they said: magician! supplicate thy Lord for us for that which He hath covenanted with thee; verily we shall let ourselves be guided. 49 But when We removed the torment from them, behold! They broke their covenant (that they will believe if We remove the torment for them). 50 And Pharaoh called out among his people; he said, "O my people, does not the kingdom of Egypt belong to me, and these rivers flowing beneath me; then do you not see? 51 Am I not better than this lowly man who can barely express himself? 52 Why have no armlets of gold been given him, or angels sent down successively with him' 53 So he made his people unsteady, and they obeyed him; surely they were an ungodly people. 54 So when they incurred Our wrath, We exacted retribution from them, and drowned them all, 55 And We made them a thing past, and an example for those after (them). 56
