The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
56 verses, revealed in Mecca after Unknown Person (Al-Muzzammil) before The Key (Al-Faatehah)
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
O thou enveloped in thy cloak, 1 Arise and warn, 2 Thy Lord magnify, 3 and purify your clothing, 4 and flee from the statues! 5 And bestow not favour that thou mayest receive more. 6 And persevere in the way of your Lord. 7 When the trumpet is sounded,. 8 that very Day shall be a day of anguish, 9 For the disbelievers - not easy. 10 Leave him to Me whom I created alone, 11 And gave him vast wealth. 12 and sons to be by his side, 13 and for whom I have smoothed the way (to power and riches), 14 And who yet coveteth that shall increase. 15 Never! For he is an enemy to Our signs! 16 I shall force him to endure a painful uphill climb! 17 Lo! He reflected, and determined -- 18 death seize him, how he determined! 19 And once more let him be cursed, how he plotted! 20 Then he beheld, 21 And frowned and puckered his brow, 22 then he retreated and grew proud 23 Then said he: "This is nothing but magic, derived from of old; 24 Naught is this but the word of Man. 25 I will drive him into Saqar. 26 And what will make you realize what hell is? 27 It lets nothing remain and leaves nothing [unburned], 28 it scorches the skin; 29 there are nineteen [angels] in charge of it -- 30 We have appointed none but angels as the keepers of the Fire, and We have not made their number but as a trial for the unbelievers so that those who have been endowed with the Book will be convinced and the believers' faith will increase, and neither those who have been endowed with the Book nor the believers will fall into any doubt. As for those in whose hearts there is a sickness as well as the unbelievers, they will say: “What did Allah aim at by this strange parable?” Thus does Allah let whomsoever He pleases to go astray, and directs whomsoever He pleases to the Right Way. And none knows the hosts of your Lord but He. (And Hell has only been mentioned here) that people may take heed. 31
