The tribe of Thamud also rejected the messengers. 141 When their brother Saleh said to them: "Will you not take heed?" 142 I am for you an honest Messenger. 143 so fear you God, and obey you me.' 144 "And no reward whatever do I ask of you for it: my reward rests with none but the Sustainer of all the worlds. 145 "Will you be left secure in that which you have here? 146 In these gardens and these springs, 147 “And fields and palm-trees, with delicate tendrils?” 148 hewing out houses in the mountains and taking pride in your skill? 149 "Be, then, conscious of God, and pay heed unto me, 150 And do not obey the bidding of the extravagant, 151 those who spread corruption on earth instead of setting things to rights!" 152 They said, "You are only of those affected by magic. 153 You are but a human like ourselves. Produce for us a sign, if you are of the truthful' 154 He said: yonder is a she-camel; to her a drink, and to you a drink, each on a day known. 155 and do her no harm, lest suffering befall you on an awesome day!" 156 Yet they hamstrung her, and then they became regretful: 157 And the punishment seized them. Indeed in that is a sign, but most of them were not to be believers. 158 Yet verily your Lord is mighty and merciful. 159
