The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
O THOU [in thy solitude] enfolded! 1 stand up, deliver your warning, 2 And your Lord (Allah) magnify! 3 purify your garments; 4 And all defilement shun! 5 Give not, thinking to gain greater 6 And be patient for the sake of your Lord (i.e. perform your duty to Allah)! 7 Then when the horn shall be blown, 8 that Day will be a hard and distressing Day. 9 and for the disbelievers, in particular, it will not be at all easy. 10 Leave Me with the one I created alone 11 whom I have endowed with abundant riches, 12 and sons standing before him, 13 And made life smooth and comfortable for him! 14 yet he is eager that I increase him. 15 Nay! For lo! he hath been stubborn to Our revelations. 16 [and so] I shall constrain him to endure a painful uphill climb! 17 He reflected and then hatched a scheme. 18 death seize him, how he determined! 19 yea, he destroys himself, the way he meditates! 20 Then he considered [again]; 21 Then frowned and grimaced. 22 Then he turned back and was arrogant 23 And said: This is naught else than magic from of old; 24 Nothing more than the speech of a man!" 25 Soon I will cast him into hell. 26 What will let you know what the Scorching is like! 27 Naught doth it permit to endure, and naught doth it leave alone!- 28 It scorches the mortal. 29 Over it are nineteen (angels as guardians and keepers of Hell). 30 And We have not made the wardens of the fire others than angels, and We have not made their number but as a trial for those who disbelieve, that those who have been given the book may be certain and those who believe may increase in faith, and those who have been given the book and the believers may not doubt, and that those in whose hearts is a disease and the unbelievers may say: What does Allah mean by this parable? Thus does Allah make err whom He pleases, and He guides whom He pleases, and none knows the hosts of your Lord but He Himself; and this is naught but a reminder to the mortals. 31
