O YOU ENWRAPPED in the cloak (of Prophethood), 1 Keep awake [in prayer] at night, all but a small part 2 half the night, or a little less 3 or add to it [at will]; and [during that time] recite the Qur'an calmly and distinctly, with thy mind attuned to its meaning. 4 Behold, We shall bestow upon thee a weighty message 5 Indeed, the first part of night is heavier in tread, and more upright in speech. 6 You have by day prolonged occupations. 7 Remember the name of your Lord, and devote yourself to Him wholeheartedly. 8 (He is) Lord of the East and the West: there is no god but He: take Him therefore for (thy) Disposer of Affairs. 9 And bear patiently what they say and avoid them with a becoming avoidance. 10 And let Me alone with the beliers, owners of ease: and respite thou them a little. 11 Surely with Us are heavy fetters and a flaming fire, 12 And food that chokes and a painful punishment - 13 (They will come across all this) on the Day when the earth and the mountains shall tremble violently and the mountains shall crumble into heaps of scattered sand. 14 We have sent to you, (O men!) a messenger, to be a witness concerning you, even as We sent a messenger to Pharaoh. 15 However, the Pharaoh disobeyed the Messenger and We seized him with a severe retribution. 16 How, then, if you refuse to acknowledge the truth, will you protect yourselves on that Day which shall turn the hair of children grey, 17 And the heaven shall be split therein. His promise indeed must be fulfilled. 18 This is indeed an advice; so whoever wishes may take the path towards his Lord. 19
