The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
A beseecher besought the visitation of chastisement, 1 for the unbelievers, which none may avert, 2 from punishing them. He is the Lord of the Ascending Stairways, 3 On that Day (of Judgment), long as fifty thousand years, the angels and the Spirit will ascend to Him. 4 Therefore endure with a goodly patience. 5 Surely they think it to be far off, 6 but We see it is nigh. 7 It shall befall on a Day whereon the heaven shall become like unto dregs of oil. 8 And the mountains shall be as tufts of wool 9 and no bosom friend will enquire about any of his bosom friends 10 though they may see each other. A sinner will wish that he could save himself from the torment of that day by sacrificing his children, 11 his companion (wife), his brother, 12 and his kinsfolk who gave him shelter, 13 And all those who are in the earth then only if the redemption saves him! 14 No, in truth, it is a Furnace! 15 tearing away his skin! 16 It calls out to him who reverted and turned away. 17 And collect (wealth) and hide it (from spending it in the Cause of Allah). 18 ۞ Surely man was created fretful, 19 bewailing when evil befalls him, 20 If good comes to him he holds back his hand, 21 Except the observers of prayer - 22 Those who are constant at their prayer 23 And those in whose wealth is a recognised right. 24 to those who ask [for help] and to the destitute; 25 And those who hold to the truth of the Day of Judgment; 26 who are afraid of the torment of their Lord, 27 Surely no one can be secure from the punishment of his Lord, -- 28 And those who preserve their chastity 29 Except with their wives and the (captives) whom their right hands possess,- for (then) they are not to be blamed, 30 But those who seek more than this will be transgressors; 31 And those who respect their trusts and covenants; 32 And those who are firm upon their testimonies. 33 And those who are mindful of their moral obligations. 34 They will be honoured in the Gardens of Bliss. 35
