Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
Ha-Mim. 1 By the manifest Book (this Quran) that makes things clear, 2 Lo! We revealed it on a blessed night - Lo! We are ever warning - 3 Therein (that night) is decreed every matter of ordainments. 4 As commands from Us. It is indeed We who send (messengers), 5 as a mercy from thy Lord (surely He is the All-hearing, the All-knowing) 6 He is the Lord of heaven and earth and all that is between them, if only you would really believe, 7 There is no Allah save Him. He quickeneth and giveth death; your Lord and Lord of your forefathers. 8 Nay, but they [who lack inner certainty] are but dying with their doubts. 9 So watch for the day when the sky begins to emit clear smoke, 10 covering the people; this is a painful chastisement. 11 (They will say:) "Our Lord! remove the Penalty from us, for we do really believe!" 12 How shall the message be (effectual) for them, seeing that an Messenger explaining things clearly has (already) come to them,- 13 but then they turned away from him, saying: 'He is tutored, mad' 14 We now remove the punishment for some days so you will again commit the same. 15 On the Day when We shall seize you with the greatest grasp. Verily, We will exact retribution. 16 ۞ And before them We indeed tried the people of Firaun, and an Honourable Noble Messenger came to them. 17 Saying: restore to me the bondmen of Allah, verily I am unto you an apostle trusted. 18 and do not exalt yourselves in defiance of Allah. I have come to you with a clear authority (as a Messenger). 19 And lo! I have sought refuge in my Lord and your Lord lest ye stone me to death. 20 'But if so be that you believe me not, go you apart from me!' 21 Then he called to his Lord: "These are a sinful people." 22 So depart thou with My bondmen by night; verily ye shall be pursued. 23 and leave the sea becalmed [between thee and Pharaoh's men]: for, verily, they are a host destined to be drowned!" 24 They left how many gardens and fountains, 25 and fields of grain, and noble dwellings, 26 and good things in which they took delight. 27 Thus (it was), and We gave them as a heritage to another people. 28 Then neither the sky shed tears over them nor the earth. They were granted no respite. 29
