The Embryo (Al-Alaq)
19 verses, revealed in Mecca. First revelation of the Quran before The Pen (Al-Qalam)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
Read! In the Name of your Lord, Who has created (all that exists), 1 Hath created man from a clot! 2 Read, for your Lord is most beneficent, 3 Who taught by the pen, 4 taught the human what he did not know. 5 Yet man behaves arrogantly, 6 In that he looketh upon himself as self-sufficient. 7 However, (all things) will return to your Lord. 8 What do you think? Have you seen he who forbids 9 A slave (Muhammad (Peace be upon him)) when he prays? 10 What will happen if the praying person is rightly guided 11 or if he commands others to maintain piety!? 12 Have you thought that if he denies and turns away, 13 Knoweth he not that Allah beholdeth? 14 No indeed; if he does not desist, We shall drag him by the forelock; 15 a lying, sinful forelock. 16 Then let him call his associates; 17 We will call the angels of Hell. 18 By no means! Obey not thou him. Continue to adore, and continue to draw nigh. ۩ 19
