A throng of the ancients 39 And a multitude from the later generations. 40 And those of the left hand, how wretched are those of the left hand! 41 [They will be] in scorching fire and scalding water 42 And in the shades of Black Smoke: 43 Nothing (will there be) to refresh, nor to please: 44 Verily, before that, they indulged in luxury, 45 and they persisted obstinately in awful sin, 46 And they used to say, "What! when we die and become dust and bones, shall we then indeed be raised up again?- 47 (We) and our fore-fathers of yore?” 48 Say: "Yea, those of old and those of later times, 49 will be brought together for an appointment on an appointed day. 50 Then you, the erring and the deniers, 51 shall all eat from the Tree of al-Zaqqum, 52 And filling with it your bellies 53 and drink boiling water on top of that, 54 And will drink as the drinking of thirsty camels. 55 This shall be their hospitality on the Day of Doom. 56 We have created you, then why would you not confirm it? 57 Have you considered the seed? 58 Do ye create it or are We the Creator? 59 We have ordained death among you and We are not to be overcome, 60 That We may transfigure you and make you what ye know not. 61 And you have indeed learnt about the first creation, so why do you not ponder? 62 Ponder upon the soil you till, 63 Is it you or We Who make them grow? 64 If We so wished, We could have reduced your harvest to rubble, and you would have been left wonder-struck to exclaim: 65 "Verily, we are ruined! 66 Nay! we are deprived. 67 See ye the water which ye drink? 68 Is it you that send it down from the clouds or We? 69 If We willed We verily could make it bitter. Why then, give ye not thanks? 70 And have you seen the fire that you ignite? 71 Is it you who produced its tree, or are We the producer? 72 We, even We, appointed it a memorial and a comfort for the dwellers in the wilderness. 73 Then glorify with praises the Name of your Lord, the Most Great. 74
