In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful
O thou wrapped up in thy raiment! 1 Keep awake [in prayer] at night, all but a small part 2 half of it, or reduce it a little; 3 Or a little more; and recite the Quran (aloud) in a slow, (pleasant tone and) style. 4 Indeed, We will cast upon you a heavy word. 5 Surely, getting up at night [for worship] is the most potent means of subduing the self and most suitable for the word [of prayer]. 6 Verily there is for thee by day occupation prolonged. 7 But recite the name of your Lord withdrawing yourself from everything, devoting yourself exclusively to Him. 8 He is the only Lord, so choose Him as your guardian. 9 And patiently endure upon what the disbelievers say, and leave them for good. 10 And leave Me and the rejecters, the possessors of ease and plenty, and respite them a little. 11 We have in store for them heavy fetters and a blazing Fire, 12 food which chokes (them), and a painful torment. 13 On the day the earth and mountains will rock violently, and the mountains turn to a heap of poured-out sand. 14 Lo! We have sent unto you a messenger as witness against you, even as We sent unto Pharaoh a messenger. 15 However, the Pharaoh disobeyed the Messenger and We seized him with a severe retribution. 16 Then how can you avoid the punishment, if you disbelieve, on a Day that will make the children grey-headed (i.e. the Day of Resurrection)? 17 on which the heaven will split apart, and His promise is done. 18 Indeed, this is a reminder, so whoever wills may take to his Lord a way. 19
