The Stars (Al-Najm)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
I swear by the star when it goes down. 1 That your companion is not confused, nor has he gone astray, 2 nor does he speak out of his desire. 3 It is only an Inspiration that is inspired. 4 He has been taught by the Extremely Powerful. 5 one endowed with immense wisdom. He came forth and stood poised, 6 being on the higher horizon. 7 Then the Spectacle became closer, and came down in full view. 8 Till he was (distant) two bows' length or even nearer, 9 And He revealed unto His slave that which He revealed. 10 The [servant's] heart did not give the lie to what he saw: 11 Will ye therefore dispute with him concerning that which he hath seen? 12 And he certainly saw him in another descent 13 Near Sidrat-ul-Muntaha [lote-tree of the utmost boundary (beyond which none can pass)], 14 Close to which is the Garden of Tranquility, 15 When that which shroudeth did enshroud the lote-tree, 16 The sight turned not aside, nor it exceeded. 17 Verily he saw one of the greater revelations of his Lord. 18 Have you then considered the Lat and the Uzza, 19 and about the third deity, al-Manat? 20 Shall you have the male issues, and He the female issues? 21 That indeed is a division unfair! 22 They are naught but names yourselves have named, and your fathers; God has sent down no authority touching them. They follow only surmise, and what the souls desire; and yet guidance has come to them from their Lord. 23 Shall man have whatsoever he wisheth for! 24 despite the fact that [both] the life to come and this present [one] belong to God [alone]? 25
