The believers ask: 'Has a chapter been sent down' But when a clear chapter is sent down and fighting is mentioned in it, you see those in whose hearts is sickness looking towards you as one who swoons at death. 20 obedience [to God's call] and a word that could win [His] approval: for, since the matter has been resolved [by His revelation,] it would be but for their own good to remain true to God. 21 If you turned away, would you then haply work corruption in the land, and break your bonds of kin? 22 Such are they whom Allah curseth so that He deafeneth them and maketh blind their eyes. 23 Do they not then reflect on the Quran? Nay, on the hearts there are locks. 24 Those who turn their backs after the way of guidance has been opened to them, have been surely tempted by Satan and beguiled by illusory hopes. 25 This was so because they said to those who disdain what God has revealed: "We shall obey you in some things." But God knows their secret intentions well. 26 How shall it be when the angels (of death) take them and beat them on their face and back? 27 That is because they have followed what angers God, and have been averse to His good pleasure, so He has made their works to fail. 28
