The Night (Al-Layl)
In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful
CONSIDER the night as it veils [the earth] in darkness, 1 By the day when it appeareth in glory, 2 And Him who created the male and female, 3 Verily, [O men,] you aim at most divergent ends! 4 Thus, as for him who gives [to others] and is conscious of God, 5 And (in all sincerity) testifies to the best,- 6 We shall facilitate for him the Way to Bliss. 7 But as for he who withholds and considers himself free of need 8 And denied the best matter, 9 For him We shall ease the way of adversity, 10 and what will his wealth avail him when he goes down [to his grave]? 11 Surely it is for Us to show the Right Way, 12 and to Us belong the Last and the First. 13 I have warned you about the fierce blazing fire 14 none shall enter it but the most wicked, 15 The one who denied and turned away. 16 But save him who fears 17 he that spends his possessions [on others] so that he might grow in purity 18 And no one has done a favour to him, for which he should be compensated. 19 but only to seek the good pleasure of his Lord Most High. 20 He surely will be pleased (when he will enter Paradise). 21
