[AND the tribe of] Thamud gave the lie to [one of God's] message-hearers 141 When their fellowman Saleh said to them, “Do you not fear?” 142 Behold, I am an apostle [sent by Him] to you, [and therefore] worthy of your trust: 143 So fear Allah, and obey me. 144 And I ask of you no wage therefor; my wage is the concern only of the Lord of the Worlds. 145 "Do you think that you will remain here peacefully forever 146 "In gardens and springs. 147 sown fields, and palms with slender spathes? 148 And you hew houses out of the mountains exultingly; 149 Fear Allah and obey me 150 Do not obey the orders of the transgressors 151 Who corrupt the land and do not reform it." 152 They said: thou art but one of the bewitched; 153 thou art naught but a mortal, like us; then produce a sign, if thou art one of the truthful.' 154 He said, 'This is a she-camel; to her a draught and to you a draught, on a day appointed, 155 "And touch her not with harm, lest the torment of a Great Day seize you." 156 Then they hamstrung her; and then they became regretful. 157 and the chastisement seized them. Surely in that is a sign, yet most of them are not believers. 158 Surely thy Lord, He is the All-mighty, the All-compassionate. 159
