And We gave Moses the Book and sent after him a train of Messengers in succession. Then We sent Jesus, son of Mary, with clear Signs and supported him with the Holy Spirit. Then how is it that whenever a Messenger came to you wish that which did not suit your lusts, you grew rebellious against him, and repudiated some and slew others. 87 And they say: Our hearts are covered. Nay, Allah has cursed them on account of their unbelief; so little it is that they believe. 88 And when there cometh unto them a scripture from Allah, confirming that in their possession - though before that they were asking for a signal triumph over those who disbelieved - and when there cometh unto them that which they know (to be the truth) they disbelieve therein. The curse of Allah is on disbelievers. 89 Vile is that for which they have bartered their souls, that they should disbelieve that which Allah hath sent down, out of envy that Allah should reveal, out of His grace, unto whosoever of His bondmen He listeth. Wherefore they have drawn upon themselves wrath upon wrath, and unto the infidels shall be a torment ignominious. 90 And when it is said to them, Believe in what Allah has revealed, they say: We believe in that which was revealed to us; and they deny what is besides that, while it is the truth verifying that which they have. Say: Why then did you kill Allah's Prophets before if you were indeed believers? 91 ۞ And Moses came to you with the clear signs, then you took to yourselves the Calf after him and you were evildoers. 92 Remember when We took your pledge and exalted you on the Mount (saying:) "Hold fast to what We have given you, firmly, and pay heed," you said: "We have heard and will not obey." (The image of) the calf had sunk deep into their hearts on account of unbelief. Say: "Vile is your belief if you are believers indeed!" 93 Say, "If God's abode of the Hereafter is for you alone, to the exclusion of all others, then wish for death, if you are truthful." 94 But never will they long for it, because [they are aware] of what their hands have sent ahead in this world: and God has full knowledge of evildoers. 95 And thou wilt most certainly find that they cling to life more eagerly than any other people, even more than those who are bent on ascribing divinity to other beings beside God: every one of them would love to live a thousand years, although the grant of long life could not save him from suffering [in the hereafter]: for God sees all that they do. 96
