The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
O YOU ENFOLDED in your mantle (of reform), 1 Arise and warn, 2 Proclaim the glory of your Lord; 3 and purify your clothing, 4 stay away from sins 5 And show not favour, seeking wordly gain! 6 And for the sake of your Lord, be patient. 7 And [warn all men that] when the trumpet-call [of resurrection] is sounded, 8 that shall be a Harsh Day 9 For the infidels, not easy. 10 Leave Me alone with he whom I created 11 And gave him vast wealth. 12 And sons abiding in his presence 13 and whom I have provided with every resource, 14 and yet, he greedily desires that I give yet more! 15 Never! For he is an enemy to Our signs! 16 Soon I shall mount him on Saood, the hill of fire. 17 Indeed, he thought and deliberated. 18 May he be accursed, how he planned! 19 And once more let him be cursed, how he plotted! 20 Then he looked round; 21 then frowned and scowled; 22 then he retreated, and waxed proud. 23 Then he said: naught is this but magic from of old; 24 "This is nothing but the word of a mortal!" 25 Him shall I soon roast in Hell. 26 And what have you understood, what hell is! 27 It lets nothing remain and leaves nothing [unburned], 28 It shrivelleth the man. 29 there are nineteen [angels] in charge of it -- 30 We have appointed only angels to be wardens of the Fire, and their number have We made to be a stumbling-block for those who disbelieve; that those to whom the Scripture hath been given may have certainty, and that believers may increase in faith; and that those to whom the Scripture hath been given and believers may not doubt; and that those in whose hearts there is disease, and disbelievers, may say: What meaneth Allah by this similitude? Thus Allah sendeth astray whom He will, and whom He will He guideth. None knoweth the hosts of thy Lord save Him. This is naught else than a Reminder unto mortals. 31
