We created man out of dry clay, from moulded mud, 26 And the jinn did We create aforetime of essential fire. 27 And (remember) when your Lord said to the angels: "I am going to create a man (Adam) from sounding clay of altered black smooth mud. 28 When I have formed him and breathed My spirit into him, fall down in prostration before him," 29 So the angels prostrated themselves, all of them together. 30 except iblis (father of the jinn) who refused to be one of those who prostrated themselves. 31 The Lord inquired: "Iblis! What is the matter with you that you did not join those who prostrated?" 32 He said: I am not one to prostrate myself unto a mortal whom Thou hast created out of potter's clay of black mud altered! 33 Said Allah, “Therefore exit from Paradise, for you are an outcast.” 34 And indeed, upon you is the curse until the Day of Recompense." 35 Iblis prayed, "Lord, grant me respite until the Day of Judgment". 36 Allah said: verily then thou art of the respited: 37 unto the day of a known time.' 38 [Whereupon Iblis] said: "O my Sustainer! Since Thou hast thwarted me, I shall indeed make [all that is evil] on earth seem goodly to them, and shall most certainly beguile them - into grievous error 39 except for Your chosen servants." 40 He said: This is a right way with Me: 41 Over My true servants you will be able to exercise no power, your power will be confined to the erring ones, those who choose to follow you. 42 And verily, Hell is the promised abode for them all! 43 It hath seven gates, and each gate hath an appointed portion. 44
