The Town (Al-Balad)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
۞ Nay! I swear by this city. 1 – this city wherein you have been rendered violable– 2 and I swear by the parent and his offspring: 3 Assuredly We have created man in trouble. 4 Does he think that no one has power over him? 5 He saith: I have wasted riches plenteous. 6 Thinks he that none sees him? 7 Have We not made for him two eyes 8 and a tongue, and a pair of lips, 9 And showed him two highways (of good and evil)? 10 But he has not attempted the ascent. 11 and what shall teach thee what is the steep? 12 (It is) to free a slave, 13 or the feeding in times of famine 14 of an orphan near of kin, 15 Or some poor wretch in misery, 16 and to be one of those who believe and urge one another to steadfastness and compassion. 17 These are the people of the right hand. 18 But they who disbelieved in Our signs - those are the companions of the left. 19 On them will be Fire vaulted over (all round). 20
