۞ We had earlier given Abraham true direction, for We knew him well. 51 When he said to his father and his people, "What are these statues to which you are devoted?" 52 They answered: "We found our fathers worshipping them." 53 Said he: "Indeed, you and your forefathers have obviously gone astray!" 54 They said, "Have you come to us with truth, or are you of those who jest?" 55 He answered: "Nay, but your [true] Sustainer is the Sustainer of the heavens and the earth - He who has brought them into being: and I am one of those who bear witness to this [truth]!" 56 By Allah, I will certainly outwit your idols as soon as you have turned your backs and gone' 57 So he made them into fragments, except a large one among them, that they might return to it [and question]. 58 They said: Who hath done this to our gods? Surely it must be some evil-doer. 59 They said: We heard a youth speak of them, who is called Ibrahim. 60 Said they: Then bring him before the eyes of the people, perhaps they may bear witness. 61 [And when he came.] they asked: "Hast thou done this to our gods, O Abraham?" 62 Said he, “Rather, their chief may have done it; so question them, if they can speak.” 63 They then turned to themselves, and said: verily ye it is who are the wrong-doers. 64 But then they reversed their minds: 'You know they do not speak' 65 He said: Worship ye then instead of Allah that which cannot profit you at all, nor harm you? 66 Fie on you and those you worship besides God! Will you not understand?" 67 They said: 'Burn him and help your gods, if you are going to do anything' 68 Allah said, "O fire, be coolness and safety upon Abraham." 69 And they desired a war on him, but We made them the greatest losers. 70 But We delivered him and (his nephew) Lut (and directed them) to the land which We have blessed for the nations. 71 And We bestowed upon him Isaac and [Isaac's son] Jacob as an additional gift and caused all of them to be righteous men, 72 And We made them Imams who guided (people) by Our command, and We revealed to them the doing of good and the keeping up of prayer and the giving of the alms, and Us (alone) did they serve; 73 And Lut! We vouchsafed unto him judgment and knowledge, and We delivered him out of the city which had been working foul deeds; verily they were a people evil, wicked. 74 And We admitted him to Our Mercy, truly, he was of the righteous. 75
