The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
O thou enveloped in thy cloak, 1 Arise and warn, 2 And thine Lord magnify! 3 And thy garments keep free from stain! 4 And pollution shun. 5 And do not through giving seek thyself to gain, 6 be patient unto your Lord. 7 And when the trumpet is blown, 8 That will be- that Day - a Day of Distress,- 9 Far from easy for those without Faith. 10 Leave Me with him whom I alone have created, 11 And gave him vast wealth. 12 And sons present by his side. 13 and whom I have provided with every resource, 14 and who still greedily desires that I should bestow upon him more. 15 By no means! For to Our Signs he has been refractory! 16 I shall oblige him to (climb a slippery mountain in the Hell-fire called As-Sa'ud, or to) face a severe torment! 17 Surely he reflected and guessed, 18 And woe to him! How he plotted!- 19 What an evil plan he has made! 20 Then he looked, 21 and then he frowns and glares, 22 and he turned his back and behaved arrogantly 23 Then he said: "This is nothing but magic from that of old; 24 Naught is this but the word of Man. 25 I will drive him into Saqar. 26 Would that you really knew what hell is! 27 It leaveth naught; it spareth naught 28 and it burns the flesh. 29 Over it are nineteen [angels]. 30 And We have appointed none but the angels to be wardens of the Fire. And their number we have made only a trial for those who disbelieve, so that those who are vouchsafed the Book may be convinced, and that those who believe may increase in faith, and that those who are vouchsafed the Book and the believers may not doubt, and that those in whose hearts is a disease and the infidels may say: what meaneth Allah by this description! In this wise Allah sendeth astray whomsoever He will, and guideth whomsoever He will. And none knoweth the hosts of thy Lord but He. And it is naught but an admonition unto man. 31
