He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful
۞ (The Prophet (Peace be upon him)) frowned and turned away, 1 from a blind man who had come up to him. 2 What could inform thee but that he might grow (in grace) 3 (He might) remember, and the Reminder might profit him. 4 Now as for him who believes himself to be self-sufficient 5 you attend to him, 6 Yet it is not thy concern if he grow not (in grace). 7 but as for him who came unto thee full of eagerness 8 and in awe [of God] 9 you ignore him. 10 By no means (should it be so)! For it is indeed a Message of instruction: 11 Therefore let whoso will, keep it in remembrance. 12 In honored books, 13 Exalted, purified, 14 by the hands of scribes 15 Noble and dutiful. 16 Accursed is man. How ungrateful is he! 17 Of what thing did He create him? 18 From a sperm-drop He created him and destined for him; 19 He makes his path easy for him. 20 then He caused him to die and brought him to the grave, 21 Then when He listeth, He shall raise him to life. 22 No indeed! Man has not accomplished His bidding. 23 Let Man consider his nourishment. 24 We let the rain pour down in torrents 25 then We split the earth in fissures 26 And produce therein corn, 27 And grapes and clover plants (i.e. green fodder for the cattle), 28 olives, dates, 29 thickly planted gardens, 30 and fruits and herbage, 31 all this as a provision for you and your cattle. 32 When the trumpet sounds, 33 on that Day a man shall flee from his own brother, 34 his mother and his father, 35 his wife and his children. 36 For every one of them on that Day shall be business enough to occupy 37 Many a face will be glittering on that day. 38 Laughing, rejoicing at good news. 39 And other faces, on that day, with dust upon them, 40 Darkness will cover them, 41 Such will be the Kafarah (disbelievers in Allah, in His Oneness, and in His Messenger Muhammad (Peace be upon him), etc.), the Fajarah (wicked evil doers). 42
