(O Muhammad), they ask you about Dhu al-Qarnayn. Say: "I will give you an account of him." 83 Behold, We established him securely on earth, and endowed him with [the knowledge of] the right means to achieve anything [that he might set out to achieve]; 84 So he followed a course. 85 until, when he reached the setting of the sun, he found it setting in a spring of murky water and near it he found some people. We said, "Dhu'l-Qarnayn! You can either punish them or else you can treat them with gentleness." 86 He said: As to him who is unjust, we will chastise him, then shall he be returned to his Lord, and He will chastise him with an exemplary chastisement: 87 “And regarding one who believed and did good deeds – so his reward is goodness; and we shall soon give him an easy command.” 88 Thereafter he followed a way. 89 Till he reached the point of the rising sun, and saw it rise over a people for whom We had provided no shelter against it. 90 So; and We encompassed in knowledge what was with him. 91 Then he set out on another expedition 92 until he came between two mountains. He found beside them a people who could scarcely understand a word [of his language]. 93 'ThulKarnain' they said, 'Look, Gog and Magog are corrupting the earth. Build for us a barrier between us and them, and we will pay you a tribute' 94 He said: That in which my Lord has established me is better, therefore you only help me with workers, I will make a fortified barrier between you and them; 95 Bring me ingots of iron." Then after he had filled up the space between the two mountain-sides, he said: "(Light a fire) and ply bellows." When he had made it (red like) fire, he said: "Bring me molten copper which I may pour on it." 96 Thus were they made powerless to scale it or to dig through it. 97 Dhu l-Qarnayn said, "This barrier is a blessing from my Lord but when His promise comes to pass He will level it to the ground; His promise always comes true." 98 ۞ We shall leave them on that day surging like waves pressing one against the other, and the trumpet blast will be sounded, when We shall gather them all together. 99 On that Day We shall present Gehenna (Hell) to the unbelievers, 100 those whose eyes had been veiled against any remembrance of Me because they could not bear to listen [to the voice of truth]! 101
