He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
۞ He frowned and turned away 1 when the blind man approached him, 2 But what could tell thee but that perchance he might grow (in spiritual understanding)?- 3 or have been reminded [of the truth,] and helped by this reminder. 4 As for him who thinketh himself independent, 5 to him thou attendest 6 Though it is no blame to thee if he grow not (in spiritual understanding). 7 And as to him who comes to you striving hard, 8 and fearfully, 9 From him will you divert yourself. 10 By no means! Verily it is an admonition. 11 So whoever wishes may remember it. 12 (Contained) in honoured pages, 13 Exalted and holy, 14 In the hands of scribes (angels). 15 Honourable and obedient. 16 [But only too often] man destroys himself: how stubbornly does he deny the truth! 17 From what did He create him? 18 Of a sperm-drop He created him, and determined him, 19 Then He eased the way for him; 20 Then He causeth him to die, and putteth him in his grave; 21 Then when He wills, He will resurrect him. 22 Nay, but (man) hath not done what He commanded him. 23 Then let man look at his food, 24 How We poured down water in torrents, 25 And We split the earth in fragments, 26 how We made the grain to grow, 27 And grapes and clover plants (i.e. green fodder for the cattle), 28 And olive-trees and palm-trees 29 and burgeoning enclosed gardens 30 and fruits and pastures – 31 all this as a provision for you and your cattle. 32 But when the deafening blast is sounded, 33 on the Day when each man shall flee from his brother, 34 And his mother and his father, 35 his wife and his sons: 36 on that Day every man among them will have enough concern of his own -- 37 Some faces on that Day shall be beaming with happiness, 38 laughing, joyous; 39 And many a face will be covered with dust on that day. 40 o'erspread with darkness -- 41 These will be the faces of the sinful disbelievers. 42
