Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
I CALL TO witness the dawn 1 and ten nights (of pilgrimage or the last ten days of Ramadan), 2 and the even and the odd, 3 And the night when it departeth, 4 Is this not a sufficient oath for intelligent people? 5 Have you not heard of how your Lord dealt with the tribe of 'Ad, 6 of Iram, known for their lofty columns, 7 whose like has never been created in any other land. 8 And how did He deal with Thamud who hewed out rocks in the valley? 9 and with Pharaoh of the stakes? 10 who all were insolent in the land 11 And who then spread a lot of turmoil in them. 12 Thy Lord unloosed on them a scourge of chastisement; 13 Truly your Lord is ever watchful. 14 As for man, when his Lord tests him by exalting him and bestowing His bounties upon him, he says: “My Lord has exalted me.” 15 But when He tries him (differently), then straitens to him his means of subsistence, he says: My Lord has disgraced me. 16 Nay! but you do not honor the orphan, 17 And urge not on the feeding of AlMiskin (the poor)! 18 and you greedily devour the inheritance of the weak, 19 and love the riches, loving them ardently. 20 Nay! when the earth is made to crumble to pieces, 21 And thy Lord shall come with angels, rank on rank, 22 And brought [within view], that Day, is Hell - that Day, man will remember, but what good to him will be the remembrance? 23 He will say: "Alas the woe! Would that I had sent ahead something in my life." 24 On that Day no one will punish as He punishes, 25 and none can bind with bonds like His. 26 [But to the righteous, God will say], "O soul at peace, 27 Return towards your Lord – you being pleased with Him, and He pleased with you! 28 Enter among My servants 29 And enter thou My Garden. 30
