The Inevitable (Al-Waaqe'ah)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
۞ WHEN WHAT IS to happen comes to pass -- 1 Which is bound to happen undoubtedly -- 2 (a calamitous Event) that shall turn things upside down: 3 When the earth is shaken 4 and the mountains crumbled 5 so that they become as scattered dust 6 And ye are classes three. 7 Those of the right hand -- how (happy) will be those of the right hand! 8 Those on the Left -- how unlucky are those on the Left! 9 And the Outstrippers, the Outstrippers 10 they who were [always] drawn close unto God! 11 In gardens of delight; 12 A number of the earlier peoples, 13 And a few of those of later time. 14 upon close-wrought couches 15 reclining upon them, facing one another [in love]. 16 There will circulate among them young boys made eternal 17 Carrying bowls and pitchers – and cups filled with wine flowing before them. 18 that will neither make the head throb, nor intoxicate, 19 Also, they will be served with the fruits of their choice 20 Bird meats that they relish, 21 and wide-eyed houris 22 Like unto preserved pearls. 23 A recompense for that which they have been working. 24 There they shall hear no idle talk, no cause of sin, 25 Except the saying, “Peace, peace.” 26 And the fellows on the right hand; how be happy shall the fellows on the right hand be! 27 Among thornless lote-trees 28 and banana trees, 29 and spreading shade 30 And in perpetually flowing water. 31 and fruits in abundance, 32 never-ending and unforbidden. 33 And on couches or thrones, raised high. 34 We have indeed developed these women with an excellent development. 35 And have made them virgins. 36 Loving, of equal age. 37 For those of the right hand. 38
