The Embryo (Al-Alaq)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
Read in the name of your Lord Who created. 1 Created man from a clot. 2 Read! Your Lord is the Most Bountiful One 3 The One Who taught to write with the pen. 4 Taught man what he did not know. 5 Despite this, the human being still tends to rebel 6 for he believes himself to be self-sufficient. 7 Surely your returning is to your Lord. 8 Have you seen the one who forbids 9 A votary when he turns to his devotions? 10 Have you considered if he were on the right way, 11 and enjoins piety? 12 Did you consider: what if he gives the lie (to the Truth) and turns away (from it)? 13 Did he not realise that Allah is watching? 14 And yet indeed if he does not desist We shall drag him by the forelock, 15 the lying, rebellious forehead! 16 Then, let him call his assembly, 17 [the while] We shall summon the forces of heavenly chastisement! 18 Nay, pay thou no heed to him, but prostrate thyself [before God] and draw close [unto Him]! ۩ 19
