The Stars (Al-Najm)
62 verses, revealed in Mecca after Absoluteness (Al-Ikhlaas) before He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful
By the star when it goes down, (or vanishes). 1 Your Companion is neither astray nor being misled. 2 nor does he speak out of his own desire. 3 This is nothing but a revelation that is conveyed to him, 4 and taught to him 5 Endued with Wisdom: for he appeared (in stately form); 6 While he was on the uppermost horizon. 7 He (Gabriel) then came nearer and nearer. 8 And was at a distance of but two bow-lengths or (even) nearer; 9 then revealed to his servant that he revealed. 10 His (Muhammad's) heart did not lie to him about what his eyes had seen. 11 Will ye then dispute with him concerning what he seeth? 12 He saw Him indeed another time 13 By the Lote-tree beyond which none can pass, 14 Close to which is the Everlasting Paradise. 15 When that covered the lote-tree which covered it. 16 The sight turned not aside, nor it exceeded. 17 He certainly saw of the greatest signs of his Lord. 18 So did you observe the idols Lat and Uzza? 19 And another, the third (goddess), Manat? 20 Are there sons for you, and daughters for Him? 21 That were indeed an unjust division. 22 They are but names which ye have named, ye and your fathers, for which Allah hath sent down no authority. They follow but their fancy, and that which pleaseth their souls; whereas assuredly there hath come unto them from their Lord the guidance. 23 Nay, shall man have (just) anything he hankers after? 24 Rather, to Allah belongs the Hereafter and the first [life]. 25
