Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
By oath of the (particular) dawn. 1 and ten nights (of pilgrimage or the last ten days of Ramadan), 2 by the even and the odd, 3 And by the night when it departeth, 4 Is there [not] in [all] that an oath [sufficient] for one of perception? 5 Have you not considered how your Lord dealt with Ad, 6 Iram of the pillars, 7 the like of whom no nation was ever created in the lands of the world? 8 And (with) Thamud (people), who cut (hewed) out rocks in the valley (to make dwellings)? 9 and Pharaoh, he of the tent-pegs, 10 (All) these transgressed beyond bounds in the lands, 11 and caused much corruption in them: 12 Therefore your Lord let down upon them a portion of the chastisement. 13 Verily thy Lord is in an ambuscade, 14 As for the human being, when his Lord tests him, honors him, and grants him bounty, he says, "God has honored me". 15 And if He tests him and restricts his livelihood – thereupon he says, “My Lord has degraded me!” 16 No. In fact you are not generous to the orphans, 17 And you do not encourage one another to feed the poor. 18 and you greedily devour the inheritance of the weak, 19 and why do you have an excessive love of riches? 20 No! But when the earth quakes and is pounded, 21 And thy Lord cometh, and His angels, rank upon rank, 22 And Hell will be brought near that Day. On that Day will man remember, but how will that remembrance (then) avail him? 23 He will say, “Alas – if only I had sent some good deeds ahead, during my lifetime!” 24 So on that day, no one punishes like He does! 25 Nor shall any bind with His bond. 26 (On the other hand it will be said): “O serene soul! 27 return to your Lord wellpleased, wellpleasing. 28 Then enter the ranks of My chosen bondmen! 29 and enter My Paradise.” 30
