And assuredly We sent Musa with Our signs unto Fir'awn and his chiefs, and he said: verily I am an apostle of the Lord of the worlds. 46 But when he brought them Our signs, lo, they laughed at them. 47 And all the signs We showed them were always greater than the earlier ones; and We seized them with calamities, so that they may return. 48 And they said [to Musa (Moses)]: "O you sorcerer! Invoke your Lord for us according to what He has covenanted with you. Verily, We shall guide ourselves (aright)." 49 But whenever We removed the suffering from them, lo! they would break their word. 50 Then Pharaoh made a proclamation to his people: 'My people, is the kingdom of Egypt not mine and these rivers which flow beneath me? What, can you not see? 51 Or am I [not] better than this one who is insignificant and hardly makes himself clear? 52 Why have no armlets of gold been given him, or angels sent down successively with him' 53 So he made his people unsteady, and they obeyed him; surely they were an ungodly people. 54 So when they vexed Us, We took vengeance on them, and We drowned them all. 55 And We made them (a people) of the Past and an Example to later ages. 56
