The Thamud tribe denied the Noble Messengers. 141 When their brother Salih said unto them: Will ye not ward off (evil)? 142 Behold, I am an apostle [sent by Him] to you, [and therefore] worthy of your trust: 143 "So fear Allah, keep your duty to Him, and obey me. 144 I do not ask for any payment for my preaching. I shall receive my reward from the Lord of the Universe. 145 Do you believe that you will be left here to live securely in the present state 146 amidst gardens and springs 147 sown fields, and palms with slender spathes? 148 "And you carve houses out of mountains with great skill. 149 So be mindful of God and listen to me. 150 “And do not follow those who exceed the limits.” 151 Who work corruption in the land and rectify not. 152 They said: You are only of the deluded ones; 153 Thou art but a mortal like us. So bring some token if thou art of the truthful. 154 He said, "This is a she-camel. For her is a [time of] drink, and for you is a [time of] drink, [each] on a known day. 155 And do not touch her with harm, lest you be seized by the punishment of a terrible day." 156 So they hamstrung her, and in the morning could only regret. 157 And the punishment seized them. Indeed in that is a sign, but most of them were not to be believers. 158 And verily! Your Lord, He is indeed the All-Mighty, the Most Merciful. 159
