The chiefs of Pharaoh's people said, "This is most surely a skillful magician, 109 "He wants to get you out of your land, so what do you advise?" 110 They answered: "Let him and his brother wait awhile, and send unto all cities heralds 111 "To bring all the wise magicians to you." 112 And the wizards came to Pharaoh, saying: Surely there will be a reward for us if we are victors. 113 Pharaoh replied, "Certainly, and you shall also become my courtiers." 114 So they said: "O Moses, you may cast your spell first, or we shall cast ours." 115 He said, "Throw," and when they threw, they bewitched the eyes of the people and struck terror into them, and they presented a great [feat of] magic. 116 And We revealed to Moses: 'Cast thy staff!' And lo, it forthwith swallowed up their lying invention. 117 ۞ Thus was the truth established, and their doings proved in vain. 118 And Pharaoh and his people were overcome right there and became debased. 119 And the sorcerers were cast down, bowing themselves. 120 They said, 'We believe in the Lord of all Being, 121 The Lord of Musa and Harun. 122 The Pharaoh said to the magicians, "You declared your belief in him (Moses) without my permission. This is a plot to throw my people out of their city. But you will soon know. 123 "Be sure I will cut off your hands and your feet on apposite sides, and I will cause you all to die on the cross." 124 They said: "For us, We are but sent back unto our Lord: 125 "But thou dost wreak thy vengeance on us simply because we believed in the Signs of our Lord when they reached us! Our Lord! pour out on us patience and constancy, and take our souls unto thee as Muslims (who bow to thy will)! 126
