The Stars (Al-Najm)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
I CALL TO witness the star of the pleiades when it has dipped 1 Your companion does not err, nor does he go astray; 2 And he does not say anything by his own desire. 3 It is naught but revelation that is revealed, 4 taught by One who is Stern in power. 5 very strong; he stood poised, 6 And reached the highest pinnacle. 7 Then he approached and came closer, 8 And was at a distance of but two bow-lengths or (even) nearer; 9 And He revealed to His servant what He revealed. 10 The heart lied not in that which he saw. 11 Will ye then dispute with him concerning what he seeth? 12 And he certainly saw him in another descent 13 At the farthest lote-tree; 14 Near it is the Paradise of Abode. 15 When that covered the lote-tree which covered it. 16 His sight did not waver nor was it unduly bold. 17 For truly did he see, of the Signs of his Lord, the Greatest! 18 So have you considered al-Lat and al-'Uzza? 19 And Manat (another idol of the pagan Arabs), the other third? 20 Are yours the males and His the females? 21 This is certainly an unjust apportioning. 22 These [allegedly divine beings] are nothing but empty names which you have invented - you and your forefathers - [and] for which God has bestowed no warrant from on high. They [who worship them] follow nothing but surmise and their own wishful thinking - although right guidance has now indeed come unto them from their Sustainer. 23 Or is there for man whatever he wishes? 24 Nay! for Allah is the hereafter and the former (life). 25
