A throng of the ancients 39 And a (goodly) number from those of later times. 40 Those on the Left: how unfortunate are those on the Left! 41 (they shall live) amid burning winds and boiling water, 42 and a shade of thick, pitch-black smoke, 43 Nothing (will there be) to refresh, nor to please: 44 They had been affluent before, 45 and would persist in heinous sinning, 46 and constantly said: 'What, when we are dead and become dust and bones, shall we then be restored to life? 47 What, and our fathers, the ancients?' 48 Say, "Indeed, the earlier ones and the later ones 49 "All will surely be gathered together for appointed Meeting of a known Day. 50 Then shall you, O you who err and call it a lie! 51 you will indeed have to taste of the tree of deadly fruit, 52 You shall fill your bellies with it, 53 and shall drink boiling water on top of that. 54 And will drink as the drinking of thirsty camels. 55 This shall be their hospitality on the Day of Doom. 56 We have created you, so why do you not believe? 57 Behold! that which ye emit. 58 Is it you who creates it, or are We the Creator? 59 We have decreed death among you, and We are not to be outdone 60 To transfigure you and create you in (forms) that you know not. 61 And assuredly ye have fully known the first production wherefore heed ye not? 62 Have you considered the soil you till? 63 Is it you who makes it grow, or are We the grower? 64 If We willed, We could make it [dry] debris, and you would remain in wonder, 65 "Verily, we are ruined! 66 Aye! we are deprived! 67 Have you thought about the water you drink? 68 Send it down ye from the raincloud, or are We the Sender down? 69 Had We wanted, We could have made it salty. Why then do you not give thanks? 70 And have you seen the fire that you ignite? 71 Produce ye the tree thereof, or are We the Producer? 72 We, even We, appointed it a memorial and a comfort for the dwellers in the wilderness. 73 Therefor (O Muhammad), praise the name of thy Lord, the Tremendous. 74
