The Stars (Al-Najm)
In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful
By the declining star, 1 Your companion hath not gone astray, nor hath he erred. 2 Neither does he speak of his own will. 3 that [which he conveys to you] is but [a divine] inspiration with which he is being inspired 4 He has been taught by the Extremely Powerful. 5 very strong; he stood poised, 6 When he was on the uppermost horizon. 7 Then he [Jibrael (Gabriel)] approached and came closer, 8 until he was two bows' length away, or nearer. 9 And He revealed unto His slave that which He revealed. 10 The heart [of the Prophet] did not misconstrue what he saw. 11 Will ye then dispute with him concerning what he seeth? 12 For indeed he saw him at a second descent, 13 to the Lot-tree (in the seven heavens) 14 close to the Garden of Refuge. 15 When that which covers covered the lote-tree; 16 his eye swerved not; nor swept astray. 17 For truly did he see, of the Signs of his Lord, the Greatest! 18 Have ye then considered Al-Lat and AL-'uzza: 19 and the third one, Manat? -- 20 What! for you the male sex, and for Him, the female? 21 That, then, is an unjust division. 22 These are nothing but names that you and your forefathers have invented, for which Allah has sent down no authority. They are merely following their conjectures and their carnal desires although guidance has come to them from their Lord. 23 Is the human to have whatever he fancies? 24 But to Allah belongs the last (Hereafter) and the first (the world). 25
