A numerous company from among the first, 39 And a multitude of those of later time. 40 The Companions of the Left Hand,- what will be the Companions of the Left Hand? 41 They will live amid the scorching, 42 And shadow of black smoke, 43 neither cold nor graceful in shape. 44 Lo! heretofore they were effete with luxury 45 And they persisted in the great violation. 46 And they were wont to say: when we have died and become dust and bones, shall we, then, verily be raised? 47 What, and our fathers, the ancients?' 48 Say: "Indeed, the earlier and the later generations 49 will indeed be gathered together at a fixed time on an appointed Day. 50 Then you people who had gone astray and rejected the Truth 51 shall all eat from the Tree of al-Zaqqum, 52 and fill your bellies with it, 53 And upon it, you will drink the hot boiling water. 54 You shall drink it as the thirsty camels drink." 55 Such will be their welcome on the Day of Judgement. 56 We have created you, why do you not then assent? 57 Have you seen sperm? 58 Did you create it, or are We the Creator? 59 It is We who have ordained death for all of you; and We cannot be prevented 60 In the matter of exchanging you for others, and to transform you into what you do not know. 61 You have known the first growth; so why will you not remember? 62 Have ye seen that which ye cultivate? 63 Is it ye that cause it to grow, or are We the Cause? 64 Had We wanted, We could have crushed it to bits and you would have been left to lament, 65 'We are debt-loaded; 66 nay, we have been robbed!' 67 And have you seen the water that you drink? 68 Send it down ye from the raincloud, or are We the Sender down? 69 If We willed, We could make it bitter, so why are you not grateful? 70 And have you seen the fire that you ignite? 71 Is it you who have brought into being the tree that serves as its fuel - or are We the cause of its coming into being? 72 It is We who have made it as a reminder and a means of comfort for the people. 73 Glorify, then, (O Prophet), the name of your Great Lord. 74
