Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
By the Dawn, 1 and the ten nights, 2 And by the even and the odd, 3 by the night when it journeys on! 4 Is there in that an oath for the mindful? 5 (Muhammad), consider how your Lord dealt with the tribe of Ad, 6 Who were very tall like lofty pillars, 7 The like of whom were never created in the realm; 8 and Thamood, who hollowed the rocks in the valley, 9 And with Fir'awn, owner of the stakes 10 Who terrorised the region, 11 and spread much corruption in the land. 12 Therefore thy Lord poured on them the disaster of His punishment. 13 Your Lord is certainly in wait. 14 And as for man, when his Lord tries him and [thus] is generous to him and favors him, he says, "My Lord has honored me." 15 But when He tries him (differently), then straitens to him his means of subsistence, he says: My Lord has disgraced me. 16 No indeed, but you show no kindness to the orphan, 17 Nor urge upon each other the feeding of the poor, 18 and you devour the inheritance with greed, 19 And ye love riches with exceeding love. 20 No indeed! When the earth is crushed and ground to dust, 21 And your Lord has come and the angels, rank upon rank, 22 And brought [within view], that Day, is Hell - that Day, man will remember, but what good to him will be the remembrance? 23 He will say: "Ah! Would that I had sent forth (good deeds) for (this) my (Future) Life!" 24 But on that day shall no one chastise with (anything like) His chastisement, 25 And none can bind as He will bind. 26 'O soul at peace, 27 return to your Lord, well-pleased, well-pleasing. 28 Then enter the ranks of My chosen bondmen! 29 Enter thou My Paradise!' 30
