Thamud (people) belied the Messenger. 141 when their brother Salih said to them, 'Will you not be godfearing? 142 "I am a trustworthy Messenger to you. 143 So fear God and follow me. 144 And I ask of you no wage therefor; my wage is the concern only of the Lord of the Worlds. 145 Will you be left secure in what is here; 146 amidst gardens and fountains, 147 And fields of crops and palm trees with softened fruit? 148 Though ye hew out dwellings in the mountain, being skilful? 149 So fear Allah and obey me. 150 and do not follow the biddings of those that go to excesses 151 those who spread corruption in the land instead of putting things right." 152 They said: thou art but one of the bewitched; 153 You are but a human like ourselves. Produce for us a sign, if you are of the truthful' 154 He said, "This is a she-camel. She will have her share of water as you have your share, each on a certain day. 155 And touch her not with ill, lest there take hold of you the torment of a Mighty Day. 156 But they ham-strung her: then did they become full of regrets. 157 so the punishment came down upon them. Surely in that there is a sign, but most of them would not believe. 158 And most surely your Lord is the Mighty, the Merciful. 159
