Mary (Maryam)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
Kaf. Ha'. Ya'. Ayn. Sad. 1 (This is) a mention of the mercy of your Lord to His slave Zakariya (Zachariah). 2 Behold! he cried to his Lord in secret, 3 He said, "My Lord, indeed my bones have weakened, and my head has filled with white, and never have I been in my supplication to You, my Lord, unhappy. 4 now I fear my kinsmen when I am gone. [I have no hope of their continuing my mission] for my wife is barren, so grant me a successor from Yourself, 5 one that might be my heir and the heir of the house of Jacob; and make him, Lord, one that will be pleasing to You. 6 O Zakariya! surely We give you good news of a boy whose name shall be Yahya: We have not made before anyone his equal. 7 He said: "My Lord! How can I have a son, when my wife is barren, and I have reached the extreme old age." 8 He said: So (it will be). Thy Lord saith: It is easy for Me, even as I created thee before, when thou wast naught. 9 He said: "O Lord, give me a token." "Though sound," He answered, "you will not talk to any one for three nights running." 10 Zachariah came out to his people from place of worship and inspired them to glorify the Lord both in the morning and evening. 11 (To his son came the command): "O Yahya! take hold of the Book with might": and We gave him Wisdom even as a youth, 12 And compassion from Ourselves, and chastity; and he was extremely pious. 13 And dutiful to his parents, and he was not a disobedient tyrant. 14 Peace be on him on the day of his birth, and on the day of his death, and peace will be on him on the day he is raised up to life again. 15
