We sent Moses with Our signs to the Pharaoh and his nobles. He said: "I have been sent by the Lord of all the worlds." 46 But when he brought to them Our signs they laughed at them, 47 although each sign that We showed them was weightier than the preceding one: and [each time] We took them to task through suffering, so that they might return [to Us]. 48 They said, "Magician, pray to your Lord for us through your covenant with Him (If he saves us from the torment), we shall certainly seek guidance". 49 Yet no sooner did We take away the affliction from them than they broke their pledge. 50 And Pharaoh called out among his people; he said, "O my people, does not the kingdom of Egypt belong to me, and these rivers flowing beneath me; then do you not see? 51 Am I (not) better than him who is contemptible, and cannot even express himself clearly? 52 Why have bracelets of gold not been given to him and why have some angels not accompanied him?" 53 He incited his people to levity and they obeyed him. Surely they were an iniquitous people. 54 So when they incurred Our wrath, We exacted retribution from them, and drowned them all, 55 and so We made them a thing of the past, and an example to those who would come after them. 56
