[AND the tribe of] Ad gave the lie to [one of God's] message-bearers 123 when their brother Hood said to them, 'Will you not be godfearing? 124 I am a trustworthy Messenger to you. 125 fear God, then, and obey me. 126 And I ask of you no wage therefor; my wage is the concern only of the Lord of the Worlds. 127 What, you build a monument on every hill merely for fun 128 And take for yourselves palaces and fortresses that you might abide eternally? 129 And whenever you apply force become tyrannical. 130 "So fear Allah, keep your duty to Him, and obey me. 131 Fear Him who has bestowed on you what you know, 132 Hath aided you with cattle and sons. 133 And gardens and watersprings. 134 "Truly I fear for you the Penalty of a Great Day." 135 [But] they answered. "It is all one to us whether thou preachest [something new] or art not of those who [like to] preach. 136 this is nothing but the habit of the ancients, 137 And we shall not be doomed. 138 In this there is evidence (of the Truth), yet most of them do not have any faith. 139 And lo! thy Lord, He is indeed the Mighty, the Merciful. 140
